Social networks
Nowadays, social networks are turning into a common source in children’s daily lives. From an early age, they are involved in these environments, spending a great deal of time of their lives. From this perspective, this WebQuest intends to empower students with a critical point of view about the consequences of social network uses, and, at the same time, to give students different tools that allow them to take educational benefits from these environments. Furthermore, it is necessary that students recognize across the different information and tasks how to face these digital environments and situations one their own. However, they should not forget that they are not alone; their parents also have an important role in their follow-up of activities on these social networks.
Therefore, the following question will guide our WebQuest: How students can learn and develop a critical point of view about the social networks benefits and risks? We have designed the entire project through this question, proposing two tasks, and to achieve it. The first focuses on showing the risks that children can find in social networks. The second aims at figuring out the educational benefits in those digital environments.
With this WebQuest, students can develop different competences and skills such as critical and creative thinking across the different tasks, because they will construct their own notion about the social networks. They will interact with carefully selected information, through which they will do deductions and take a stance about it. They will also put the information acquired into practice in a multimodal and creative way.
At this point, it is possible to see the development of the pragmatic competence. On the one hand, students are involved in the second language acquisition through the observation of language structures. On the other hand, they are immersed in the language experience in context. Theywill create new knowledge by means of this experience. Students will put into practice what they learned and, in this way, there will be a meaningful learning of the second language and the social networks.
